Have you ever had that moment?

That moment when you find this amazing person who you think is your soul mate, BFF and partner-in-crime. You tell them your deepest, darkest secrets, while sharing your most intimate thoughts that you wouldn’t dare share with anyone else.

Suddenly out of nowhere, things turn sour. You wish there was a rewind button, or even better, you wish you could click “unfriend” and block them completely out of your life.

But things are never that easy.

We grew up watching countless television series about friendship.  They told us what life would be like once we flew the bird’s nest from our parents loving gaze, and chose who would soon become our family. However life doesn’t always imitate art, and sometimes we are left with nothing more than a bitter distain for the person we called our partner in crime, and instead left wondering wondering what the hell happened.

The NBC series Friends, spanning 10 seasons, taught us about invaluable friendship and the existence of soul mates. No. Not lovers or couples, but that one person (or in this case, six) who will accept you for who you are.

Hence, we are lead to believe that such friendships are common occurrences, however the reality, it is the equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack.

We all wish that we could have one of these relationships – someone who does not judge you, always honest, a constant lifesaver, pillow talker and your safety net.

But nothing is perfect in this world, and we take you through a few ways to work stuff out when things take a wrong turn.

1. Take the high road – This is the way to go for a friendship when someone has backstabbed you or put you in jeopardy. Hold your head up high, keep your cool and leave the whole mess behind you. No retaliation and no retribution, and whatever you do, don’t flip out. Keep calm and walk away. Sometimes letting go is the best remedy.

2. Paybacks a bitch – If you are not the type for option 1, then payback is a delightful second option. But keep in mind that once you start, there is no going back. So light your torches, spread your rumours and scream your battle cries. This means war.

3. Salvage and Recover – This is the option in a case of a mutual misunderstanding or minor problems like having a crush at the same person, or competing for something. When this happens, you need to reflect on your actions and talk to your friend before things get out of control. Look at what went wrong objectively. Sometimes things are not as bad as they seem.

4. Mutual Endings – This is the optimal option when a serious fall out happens where both parties realise that things are not working out and leave each other to lick their wounds.

Friendships like all other relationships are never easy. People are unpredictable and it never comes with a guarantee.

Unfortunately, there is no “unfriend” button in life, we have to embrace what we experience and whom we met. If things do turn sour with the BFF, take it as a lesson learned, and try to avoid making the same mistake.

Even when lessons are learned, there is no guarantee that the next would be better but we all still delve into this world of complicated relations. Why?

Because we are human.
